ABB ACH550 frequency converter installation, operation and maintenance instructions

Product scope and applicable models

ABB ACH550 full series HVAC frequency converters, consisting of three categories:

ACH550-UH: Standard HVAC inverter (1~550HP)

E-Clip Bypass: BCR/BDR/VCR/VDR bypass models (1~400HP)

PCR/PDR: Package model with input isolation switch (1~550HP)

Core security standards (mandatory requirement)

Key safety requirements

After power-off operation, wait for ≥ 5 minutes until the DC bus capacitor discharges

Voltage hazard: After shutdown, the main circuit terminals may still be energized

The IT system must remove the EMC filter screws (EM1/EM3/F1/F2)

The heat dissipation spacing is ≥ 200mm * * up and down, and ≥ 50mm * * left and right**

Wiring specification: laying of power and control lines in separate conduits

Installation steps (according to the process)

Open box inspection: check the model and inspect the appearance for damage

Installation and fixation:

R1~R6: Wall mounted/DIN rail; R7~R8: Floor standing cabinets

Fixed screws: R1~R4=M5; R5=M6; R6=M8; R7~R8=M10

Dismantling the panel: Open the cover and side panels according to the frame size

Wiring and wiring:

Power: Input U1/V1/W1, Output U2/V2/W2

Control: X1 terminal (AI/DI/RO/RS485)

Grounding: PE dedicated point grounding, multiple machines not connected in series

EMC filtering settings: connect/disconnect EM1/EM3/F1/F2 according to system type

Pre power on inspection: insulation, voltage, wiring, and no debris

Terminal and wiring specifications

Control terminal X1 (core)

AI1/AI2: Analog input (0~10V/4~20mA)

DI1~DI6: Digital input (24V)

RO1~RO3: Relay output (250VAC/2A)

RS485: 28~32 pins, Modbus communication

Power line specifications (example)

Key issues

What must be done to install ACH550 on an IT power distribution system, and what are the consequences if not done?

Answer: The EMC filter screws of the corresponding frame must be removed (R1~R4 remove EM1, R5~R6 remove F1/F2). If not removed, the internal EMC capacitor will connect the IT system to ground, causing leakage, grounding faults, equipment damage, and losing the safety advantage of not grounding the IT system.

What is the automatic switching function of the ACH550 bypass model (E-Clipse) and what are the triggering conditions?

Answer: Auto Transfer refers to the system switching to bypass power frequency operation without disturbance when the drive fails. The triggering condition is the occurrence of overcurrent, overvoltage, overheating, communication loss and other protective shutdowns in the drive, and the parameter 1608 enables automatic switching to ensure continuous operation of the fan/water pump.

What mandatory checks must be completed before powering on ACH550, and what are the most dangerous missed checks?

Answer: It is necessary to check: ① Motor insulation ≥ 1M Ω (1kV DC); ② Input voltage matching; ③ Separation of power/control lines; ④ The EMC filtering settings are correct; ⑤ There are no metal shavings inside the machine. The most dangerous missed detection is when the motor insulation is not tested, and insulation damage can directly lead to output short circuit, machine explosion, and personal electric shock.
